Disney Star Returns to EMCSD
It was all smiles at Gidley School on Friday, September 1 when 7th and 8th grade students were visited by Disney star Skai Jackson’s (Bunk'd, Jesse). Skai visited the school as an ally of No Kid Hungry, a non-profit that advocates for healthy food for all children, every day. It was her second visit to El Monte. She visited with 1st grade students from Potrero School last spring.
Superintendent Dr. Maribel Garcia, Principal Alba Zamora-Day, Assistant Principal Roseann Taing, and Director of Nutrition Dr. Robert Lewis welcomed Skai to Gidley alongside No Kid Hungry California Director, Kathy Saile. Skai greeted students and passed out prizes to students participating in Grab N’ Go, an innovative way to increase the number of 7th and 8th grade students who eat breakfast. In the Grab N’ Go breakfast model, Child Nutrition staff bring a breakfast cart to the older students so that they can quickly grab breakfast between two of their morning classes.
Skai was also welcomed into the classrooms of Mr. Peter Lam and Ms. Patricia Fletcher, where she led a class discussion on the importance of nutrition and daily breakfast alongside EMCSD Nutrition Outreach Coordinator, Caitlin Woglom. She also spoke with the students about the importance of leadership and community involvement, as she shared her work with No Kid Hungry. Most recently, Skai is working with No Kid Hungry to highlight their “Hunger in our Schools” report, which gives a voice to students in America who are going hungry. The report also highlights how communities and school district like El Monte are working to address this issue.
